Help with MySQL logs

OK, I have a webserver with MySQL, Apache, PHP, and Postfix installed. Just recently, MySQL seems to be crashing randomly every few days, and not restarting itself. I want to investigate what the problem is, but I can't seem to find any log information. I've checked /var/log/mysql.log, but the file is always empty. Also, there is a subdirectory, /var/log/mysql, but this doesn't contain a mysql.log file. Does anyone know if this indicates some deeper error, or am I just looking in the wrong place?

Cheers

Charlie
