Help with LibreOffice - Calc not opening documents & freezing

I need some help with libreoffice version 5.1.4.2 on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS. It worked perfectly well yesterday and today it doesn't. I have completely uninstalled it an reinstalled. Everything works except for calc. When I try to open a spreadsheet/excel file it greys out and freezes. At the bottom left hand corner it says "calculating". It just hangs there. Now when I run Writer or Impress, they work fine, but after trying to run Calc, they too do not open.I have to re-boot to get Write and Impress to work. If I reboot and try and run Calc from the command line (using localc), I get the following error messages:

** (process:2962): WARNING **: require a newer gtk than 3.10 for theme expectations
(soffice:2962): Gdk-WARNING **: gdk_window_set_icon_list: icons too large

I hesitate to upgrade to a later version of gtk as I read somewhere that it does not work well with the unity desktop. I have read that it breaks the unity desktop.

The error messages came up once only and have since not appeared.

LibreOffice was installed via the Synaptic Package Manager

Regards and thanks in advance for any help

Hi Moki
I had exactly the same problem. It's not that it fails to load but the takes a very long time to do the calculations. Because I removed links from the spread sheet it stuffed the calculations. Some smaller sheets did load and I was able fix this by removing links to imported data. Depending of size of the sheets leave it and check later. Mine took 20 minuets. From there you can debug your sheets and re-save. I can't quite put my finger why libreoffice puts no error messages, other than that there are valid functions that yield no results.

Regards
Ray

I agree with rayfward, you should try just loading calc by itself and not opening any particular spreadsheet with it.

Thanks for the responses. If I load calc by itself it opens. The problem starts when I try to open a spreadsheet. Actually any spreadsheet.

Have you been applying Ubuntu updates regularly? If you have only been updating libreoffice something may have got out of sync!

Ubuntu is up to date on my computer. I do regular updates. Unfortunately I was forced to install OpenOffice as I was in a real fix and had some work to do. OO is working fine.

If it works in Open Office but not LO...have you thought of reporting the bug? I think they may be interested in the error message.

Cheers
