help with installing programs (and kde trouble)

I've been trying to install a couple of programs, and I keep running into trouble.
One such problem is when running a rmp, I get the following error:
"checking for KDE headers installed... configure: error: your system is not able to compile a small KDE application! Check, if you installed the KDE header files correctly."

I've searched aroung the net a bit, and it seems that a lot of people suggest setting a path to your kde header directory, to sovle this problem. Unfortunately, I'm new to this stuff and I don't understand a few things.

First of all, how do I determine my kde install directory?
Secondly, do I add the path by editting the file "profile" in /etc?

As for my kde files, here are a few things I know:
1. kapp.h is in /usr/include
2. when I run ./configure, the following is echoed "checking for KDE... libraries /usr/lib, headers /usr/include

Finally, is it possible that my problem lies in that the program is written for KDE1, and I have KDE2 installed? If so, is it possible to install KDE is a directory like /opt/kde1? how would I then run ./configure such that it would look at /opt/kde1 for the kde1 files?
