Help with file-type association goof for folders...

OK, this is a really dumb newbie problem, but I couldn't find any way to undo it in the file-type management app in Redhat 8...

Somehow I have managed to associate the desktop shortcuts to all my folders (Trash, Home, mounted drives, etc.) with gedit, and cannot figure out how to fix it.

Here is the text I get when double-clicking:

[Desktop Entry]
Version=1.0
Encoding=UTF-8
Name=Trash
Type=X-nautilus-trash
URL=trash:
X-Nautilus-Icon=trash-empty

Any ideas?

Thanks,

James

well personally i don't understand what your talking about ... and secondly you probably wont' get any help by labeling people losers, cause they can't answer a question ...
not all questions get answered and no one is obligated to answer any questions anyways, as they do it freely and on their own time ....

but anyways the reason why i don't understand what you are talking about is because you say you associated all your desktop shortcuts to all your folders, but wouldn't you want your desktop shortcuts to be pointing to trash, home, mounted drives??

if not then what shortcuts did you mis-associate, and what folders are they supposed to be pointing to... it just doesn't make sense to me, cause the way you wrote it seems like you did what you want to do, and i can't understand what you want fixed ...

lastly, you say that text is shown when you double click an icon? well where does this text show up at ?

My sincere apologies, I wasn't at all serious when I posted the “losers” bit. I had hoped my smiley would have illustrated that, but I'm sorry for the confusion. ;)

OK, basically what it seems like I have done is associate ALL shortcuts themselves with gedit. In other words, any of those icons on the desktop (I know, very crude) like home or trash or whatnot I believe are either referred to as shortcuts or links, and it is those file types themselves that I have managed to tell the system should be opened with gedit.

When I double-click them, the text is being displayed in gedit.

I hope that makes sense, I haven't found a fix yet but use the home folder link on the main program menu in the meantime.

Thanks for you time even though it must seem like I'm a jerk!

OK, I finally figured it out, just had to do things in the right sequence...

Right-click the shortcut, open with, other application...

When it says there is nothing associated (which is a lie!) click associate application.

Make sure program to run is blank.

Even if it was already, doing this and clicking OK seems to fix the problem.

Sorry again for the loser thing!

James

Nevermind, that works once then its back to openning in gedit even though it shows there is no app associated. What a frustrating BOS!

OK, this is really getting to be a bunch of sheit!

I am trying to create a launcher now for JMARS, an application I use, specifying I want it to launch in terminal (because it must be) and that it is an application, as well as the command I want it to run.

When I double-click it it opens in FRICKIN GEDIT!!!

ALL my launchers open in gedit now. There MUST be some way to fix this!
