SOLVED Help with Compiz Fusion 3d cube on Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon
I have Ubuntu 7.10 installed and I have already installed compiz but I can't get the 3D cube to work. I have four workspaces that I can switch between down at the bottom but no actual cube. I even went through this forum, the ubuntu one, and the compiz one but I can't find anything that works. (Unless I'm doing something wrong or it isn't even possible on Ubuntu.)
Any help anyone can offer is greatly appreciated.

Do you know if the plugin is enabled or not? Open up ccsm and make sure 'Desktop Cube' and 'Rotate Cube' are checked.
If that doesn't work, check to see if compiz is actually running. There might be another issue thats keeping compiz from starting.

Yeah, desktop cube and rotate cube are enabled.
How do I check to make sure it's running?
Also now I only have two workspaces. The other two just disappeared. ccsm is set so that it has four but I only see three.

Well, are there any other compiz plugins running? That would be an indicator if it's running or not. Or else check 'ps -A | grep compiz'. What command are you using to start compiz with?
Switching cube faces is best done with the hotkeys, <Ctrl><Alt>Right or <Ctrl><Alt>Left. If you are trying to switch with KDE's desktop switcher you might run into some problems.
As a side note, the Horizontal Virtual Size in General Options controls the number of faces of the cube. Set it to 4 and the other two options to 1.

Don't set the number of workspaces in ccsm. Change by right-clicking on the workspaces icon on the bottom panel and setting the number of columns to 4. Leave it as 1 in ccsm.
Then, if desktop cube and rotate cube are enabled, it should work. Let us know.

First, Eoinrua, I tried your suggestion. I have my four workspaces at the bottom again, I went into ccsm and changed that values back to default but it's still not a cube.
Kinetic, I am a total command line beginner and a total Linux beginner. I open compiz by opening the terminal and typing in 'ccsm'. Being the total beginner that I am, I have no idea what 'ps -A | grep compiz' is let alone how to check it. Perhaps you could tell me.
The general options settings that you mentioned is what I had it at before.
Anyone know if anyone has even got the 3D cube to work on 7.10?

Aloha,
Hold ctrl and alt then use the left mouse button to grab and drag the desktop. It should be a cube. You can also grab the edge of the desktop with both mouse buttons at the same time and drag but that is a little harder. Also note that under System -> Preferences -> Advanced Desktop Settings you can access the ccsm. Antoher way to see if you got 4 sides is to do a ctrl alt down arrow. Then while still holding ctrl alt, use the left and right arrow to move the windows left and right. Please post if this works.
Mahalo,
Edward

Holding down ctrl and alt then using the left mouse button doesn't work but I can go through my workspaces using ctrl, alt, and the down arrow. I have four 'sides' but it's not a cube. No actual cube, no skydome (or anywhere it should be), I can't see the actual cube.

I want to have something like the above if possible.

Aloha,
To clarify;
You are using Ubuntu 7.10.
You have 3-D enable by loading the restricted drivers. For what video card?
You have Compiz loaded and compizconfig-settings-manager installed.
You can got to System -> Prefences -> Advanced Desktop Effects Settings.
You have Desktop Cube and Rotate Cube enabled.
You can do a ctrl alt down arrow and it shows the workspaces against the background and smaller.
You can hold ctrl alt and then use left and right arrow and the workspaces go back and forth.
You can not do ctrl alt left mouse and rotate the cube?
Ok,
Is that correct?
Mahalo,
Edward

Hi AndromedaStrain,
Don't even think about doing this on the command line. There should be no need. (And I am running 7.10 in 3D.)
You do really need to fiddle with this, unfortunately, as it's hard to legislate for every possible combination of hardware.
If you've got Desktop Cube and Rotate Cube running for sure (double-check the check box: you can set the settings in ccsm but forget to tick the enable), as well as 4 desktops, it should run.
Once that's all set up, you have to enable the effects. Try hitting F1 (or Crtrl + F1; Alt + F1; Ctrl + Alt + F1) and move the mouse to see if anything happens.
Alternatively (and this is my favourite way of invoking 3D Cube effects), just click and hold the mouse-wheel and then move the mouse.
If that doesn't work, there are some basic questions. Are you absolutely sure your video card can handle 3D? Even if it can, have you got the up-to-date drivers? I had to get the latest NVIDIA driver before I could enable 3D in Gutsy.
If your card and drivers are up to it and you're still not getting 3D, I suggest you try a different distro to see if the effects work. I'd recommend you download and try the Sabayon Live CD as its 3D effects are pre-enabled.
Let us know how you get on.

Sorry about the answering delay, I have not had access to a computer in a bit. Now, on to the business at hand.
Yes, Hiko, that is exactly correct. Beautifully summarized for anyone offering an idea that hasn't replied to this particular thread before.
Eoinrua, I don't have time to try that now but I should be able to try it out tomorrow and post the results in the afternoon.
I know my video is good enough for 3D in games, is this any different?
I have Gigabyte GeForce 8500GT 256MB PCI-E SLI Video.
I believe that I have the latest drivers but how would you check to be sure? I have been mostly relying on my sister (who has the same video) to tell me when new ones were needed and I believe she may be relying on a friend that has I have no idea how much computer knowledge.
On the subject of trying a different distribution, I am a total beginner in Linux and have not heard of that one before. Is is simple (like Ubuntu is)? Mostly easy to understand? How much space does it take, I'm running a dual boot right now so it can't be absolutely huge or anything. Can it be ran off a disk without installation or interference with the hard drive? Do you have to know partitioning to set up a dual boot with it? (Perhaps giving me a link to some information on it would be easier then answering all these questions?)
Sorry for the long post too.

Okay, Eoinrua, I tried what you suggested but it's still not working and I do have the latest drivers. Can you run the distro you suggested off a disk to try it out?

Yes. Live CDs are designed to boot into the operating system right from the CD Drive without affecting your hard disk. Sabayon Live CD has the 3-D effects enabled on the Live CD. So, if you boot off of the CD Drive, it might be a way to test things out. There are many Distros out there that offer a LiveCD but may not have 3-D enabled.
For Sabayon...

On tab Visual Effects choose Custom
