help starting xscreensaver at bootup

I'm having a problem getting the xscreensaver daemon to run at boot up (running Mandrake 9.0 w/ Windowmaker)...all the other posts I've found say
a) to put "xscreensaver &" in rc.local, doing which gives me errors because the system thinks I'm root at that point (don't know why...I'm definitely logged in as my normal user), and refuses to start a screensaver daemon for security purposes
or
b)to put "xscreensaver &" in /etc/X11/xinitrc (which on my system is actually /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc, but close enough), right before the "exec wmaker" line...the only problem is this: that line doesn't exist. Neither can I find the script where windowmaker actually is started. Am I looking in the wrong place?

starting the daemon from the command line works fine, and I can just keep doing that, but I'd really rather not have to...please help -

thanks much

you can put it in /etc/X11/Xsession

at the end
