help resizing a ext3 partition - qtparted - status: busy
this is a screen shot of me trying to resize my hda1 partition in qtparted.
http://img207.imageshack.us/img207/7...apshot10cj.png
I right click the partition but the resize functionality is greyed out.
i've tried using qtparted in the knoppix and systemrescueCD liveCD with no luck.
How can i resize the partition to make room to install another distro?

Could you try unmounting the partition?
Also, startup qtparted from a command line. It sometimes outputs additional error messages there.

I have always found the promise better than the experience.
I gave up trying to resize, and now always backup the partition(s) and delete/reallocate then restore.
That way you always have a current backup and the partitions you want.

from the article <3
"Out of the box, QTParted can create Ext2 and Ext3 partitions, but not resize them.
There is a workaround. It's a bit tedious, but it does the job. First, convert your ext3 filesystem to ext2 with this command:
$ sudo tune2fs -O ^has_journal /dev/hda1
$ sudo e2fsck /dev/hda1
Remember, ext3 is really just ext2 with journaling. You just removed the journaling, so now you're back to ext2. Don't forget to change /etc/fstab (or /mnt/dev/hda1/etc/fstab in knoppix )as well, running as root and using your favorite text editor, so that the partition listed there as ext3 is now correctly identified as ext2.
Now use QTParted to resize the partition. When you finish, convert the ext2 partition back to ext3 with this command:
$ sudo tune2fs -j /dev/hda1
Change /etc/fstab so that the partition once again is identified as ext3, and you're in business."

Don't chortle too loud - even ext2 resizing isn't always successful.
But if it worked, good luck to you ...
