hi all...
I'm very new to Linux ( just 2 days old !
).. I know these questions may sound really basic and ridiculous, but bear with me.
I am trying to install Firefox. I have already downloaded the tar.gz file and unzipped it in my home folder. Then I log in as root, and try to execute the installer. ( I was attempting to install in /usr/local/apps/ folder that I would like all my applications to be in ).
However, I get this error everytime I execute the file as a root user:
Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server
Xlib: No protocol specified
(firefox-installer-bin:25197): Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display:
The problem ceases when I try installing as a user (not root). However, If i do that, I will not have write access to /usr/local/apps/.
Question: is the :0.0 referring to DISPLAY port of the X Window? Please explain.
This is frustrating. Please help!
