Question help removing module

I have installed Fedora Core 1 on a Sony VAIO PCG-FRV25. This laptop does not have a floppy disk but the kernel has a module for it. When I shut down my laptop it tells me that the file floppy.o is missing an IRQ or something to that effect. I basically just want to remove the module from my system. I have tried to use modprobe to unload the module and the depmod to deprecate the module but I am not sure if this is right. Can anyone help me with step by step instructions to remove this from my system. I know how to recompile the kernel but everything works fine but this. If at all possible I would just like to fix this instance without recompiling.

Thanks,

David

Depends :)

Is it being loaded through hotplug or
from /etc/modules.conf?

If modules.conf remove it from there,
if hotplug put floppy in /etc/hotplug/blacklist

Cheers,
Tink

didn't work...

That didn't do it Tink. I appreciate the help though. This laptop doesn't have a floppy drive and by default the kernel that was built for this machine included a floppy drive. The only way I can think to get rid of it so far is to recompile the kernel. When I do that for some reason with acpi enabled I will lose pcmcia support with the new custom kernel upon reboot. Beats me. If anyone has any more ideas on how to turn off the floppy.o in /lib/modules/2.4.22-1.2129.nptl/kernel/drivers/block please let me know. If at all possible without having to recompile the kernel.

Thanks,
David

Look at the forum before you post(pst, this is the slackware one )...It makes issues much easier to search for.

and on the issue of the module, does it effect your system any? It doesn't sound like it so you may as well just leave it. If it's actually not allowing you a proper shutdown then you can just search your system for files that contain floppy.o in them, that's always fun....as long as you don't get a billion results, which you very well might

Just Back up floppy.o to /root from here :

/lib/modules/2.4.22-1.2129.nptl/kernel/drivers/block

Then rm the floppy.o from this directory...

worked for me and my floppy shows up as a sdX drive anyways since it's USB....

I've figured it out...

Folks,
I should have posted sooner but forgot all about this incident until i fixed it. Just go to /etc/modules.conf. In modules.conf add the line alias block-major-2 off. The block number is going to be the number designated for your floppy drive.

Thanks,
David
