Question HELP! My sound on Linux Mint isn't working after a bad update process

Hello everyone!

I've been using Linux Mint for a while now, but a couple of days ago I updated the packages and an error occurred. A "severe error on Cinnamon" message appeared on my screen and I was working on the rendered version.

Even though I don't know a thing about programming, I was able to fix it using this commands: https://www.taringa.net/posts/linux/...en-Ubuntu.html

However, afterwards the sound wasn't working. I tried to uninstall and re install ALSA, but it didn't work. Apparently it recognizes the sound card, so 'am guessing it has something to do with the drivers update.

Do you have any idea on how to fix it? Thank you so much!!! <3

Regina

I can't get to that link you posted. Doesn't really matter however. I can assume one of two things.

One is that you did some change to the system that affected sound.

Two is that some unrelated issue happened at same time.

Now that leaves the cure. Can you boot to a live media and see if sound works? If so then try to look at how the sound is being used. I'd assume your original install media could be used to boot live.

Thanks Jefro!!

Live media sound isn't working either. I just noticed that the sound output is working, so I can listen to stuff through my headphones, so the problem is something related to the configuration of my speakers. Any other suggestion??

Usually when you install a headphone the connector inside has a sort of switch that mutes output. Maybe it is failing/stuck.

Sometimes there is a setting for headphone and for sound out. Maybe sound out is muted.

Could be a problem with speakers or plugged in wrong output?

you can always open 'alsamixer' and look at some settings.
press F5 to see all channels.
a channel marked 'MM' is muted, unmuting might help.
there's also an outo-mute setting on most soundcards, and maybe a few more to check out.
always remember what you did so you can undo it later, if necessary.

you should probably also do the same for pulseaudio - the mixer is usually 'pavucontrol'.
