Help me with Mandrake 10 configuration please

i must say that linux gives me headaches, i installed Mandrake 10 everything works quite good for programming side,but sound and internet don't work. anyone out there can help me? i'm pulling my hair out and still don't know what the heck is going on.
problem: 1) sound----> after login i here a jerky beep sound. really annoying
2) internet ----> i ran ifconfig, dhcpcd and went to the network setup in the control pannel (forgot the name but it sounds similar) nothing works.

Perhaps you could tell us a bit more about the setup that you have to connect to the internet. Are you on a LAN, is this an anlog modem, is this an ADSL modem....?

Also it's important to know WHAT you have tried so far...and what error messages have you gotten.

Sound works now, but net still is major problem. i'm having motorola sb5100 cable modem connected to DI-624+ cable. If you could show me step by step of how to config or tell me what to do in order to make my net working. i really appreciate it. It is so easy with windows config. With Linux i'm like a blind person walking in the dark.
