Help! Kmail IMAP cache corrupt!

I have been using Kmail in Kontact for a number of months. Just yesterday I was horrified to discover a full subfolder of my mail, even though the mails appeared in list, I was not able to read their content. My suspicion was my external HDD corrupted since it beeped the power shortage signal the day before. My kmail mails are all stored on external HDD which i can bring to different stations to check my incoming emails.

I tried a few tricks like fsck the external HDD but still not avail. The only workaround is to create another subfolder and copy the mails over one at a time. If I were to select all of them and copy in one go, a message will show "IMAP cache corrupt".

Can someone with prior experience or savvy enough to give me a pointer.

TIA

Wilson

With POP you download e-mails to your client but with IMAP you keep e-mails on the server. Caching is used for speeding up things and should be volatile and expendable. You can find that out by renaming your cache directory name to say name_old, create the toplevel cache dir name and restart Kmail. It should then show it retrieves messages and re-populates the cache. On the other hand if you fear it is your HD malfunctioning and not a "simple" repairable filesystem problem then you should consider making a low level backup (say with 'dd') to another medium instead of (or before) fixing or salvaging things n GUI layers away from the problem.

If warnings are there to ignore we should be seeing melting polar caps RSN.
