HELP! klauncher failing...

When I launch KDE, as of this afternoon it has begun displaying this error message on startup:

Could not start process Unable to create io-slave:
klauncher said: Unknown protocol 'file'.

What does this mean? Since I started getting it, none of the items on the KDE Menu appear, except for "Bookmarks", "Logout", and other basic items. None of my "Applications", "Networking", "Multimedia" or other groups are where they should be. (It's KDE 3, which I've been running for about 30 days now, with no problems apart from not having a properly working KDM -- but I don't really need one...)

On launching Kcontrol from a term to try and rebuild my menus, I get this:

kio (KSycoca): WARNING: Found version 40, expecting version 46 or higher.
kio (KSycoca): WARNING: Outdated database found
kio (KSycoca): ERROR: No database available!
kcontrol: WARNING: No K menu group with X-KDE-BaseGroup=settings found ! Defaulting to Configuration/KDE/

If anyone can help me (a) repair what's broken and (b) identify what might have caused this, I would be extremely grateful!

Thanks!

Well, some hunting around found a tmp directory with ksycoca and ksycocastamp files. Removing them restored my old setup.

I still don't know why this happened, though...
