I don't know of any way to load Linux from an on-disk iso. The problem is that the isolinux on the installation iso needs to be the active operating system, not the linux you already have installed. You really need to get a CD/DVD burner. It's practically impossible to do without one.
Buy a burner for 30 bucks, or see if you can upgrade your old ubuntu. I know nothing about ubuntu, so I can't help you with upgrading. But, seriously, if you are going to do anything non-trivial with a computer, you need a burner. At the very least, you need to burn a copy of Knoppix to have on hand. You also need to burn copies of any personal files you need to save.
