Help installing Gene Cluster 3.0

Hey guys,

I'm new to this forum so please let me know if I should move/delete this post and place it elsewhere.

Anyhow, for some context I am working in a science lab and the only computer this lab had left has ubuntu OS. I have roughly 2 weeks of ubuntu experience, yet am having a bit of trouble installing a program needed, called Gene Cluster 3.0 [would post a link here but cant, simple google search should yield first result is accurate to the download site]. For whatever reason, the configuration/install went well until it said I had missing libraries. I downloaded them all, but one has been an issue.

There is a part I can't get past:

"Checking for XmStringCreateSimple in -lXm... no
Configure: error: Failed to locate the Motif library."

Now the install guide for the program does say that you need a compatible motif2.1 version, though I was sure that my computer had a better version already installed (can't remember where I had seen this, I believe it was while I tried to update motif but it said I had the latest version or something). It recommends using OpenMotif, but I'd rather not as it seems sketchy to me, and since I already have a motif ubuntu version I don't see the reason. It seems that it is not recognizing the Motif library, or something, and was curious if anyone has had a problem with this program in the past (long shot), or if someone could possibly help rectify the problem somehow.

thank you in advance to anyone who read this.

- Struggling ubuntu user

I must thank you for this! I have no idea why, but it hadn't worked for me last time I tried (unless I typed in the libmotif differently/had a different one downloaded). Appreciate the help, I feel so dumb now. Also, downloading + installing via the ubuntu software store didn't work, yet the get-apt did. Weird.

Re #3.

There are issues with new versions of "ubuntu software" :
Lots of posts in the Ubuntu Forum 'ask.ubuntu.com'.

The always reliable classic "software install GUI" synaptic can be installed :
sudo apt-get install synaptic
... And it shows all available ~40,000 packages.

Or use a manual search : apt-cache search [name] ( or part of name.)
