Help installing AIM for SlackWare

Okay, so I download AIM from the aim website and it saves the file to /root/aim-1.5.234-1.i386.tgz so i follow the recomended installation procedures. which asks me to
1.login as root file /
4. gunzip c- aim-1.5234-1.i386.tgz | tar xvf-

so i do so... and it gives me a tar error. so i do the same command without the tar f-
gunzip c-aim-1.5.234-1.i386.tgz | tar xv-

it seems to have uncompressed all the files, but now how to use the program? any help out there for a newbie???

Really there is no need to install aim itself. Both kopete and pidgin support aim and are better suited for everything.
