Help Installing a program with too many dependencies
 

Hello,

I just upgraded my system to Red Hat 9 the other day and I thought I would give enlightenment a try instead of KDE as I always use. Anyway, I downloaded the rpm
enlightenment-0.16.5-1.i386.rpm. However, it had a few dependencies that I needed. No problem, I download the three dependencies....they had dependencies.....and the dependencies had dependencies and so on. I really don't feel like getting this many rpms. One of the dependencies had 10 failed dependencies! What if each of these has 5 dependencies. I just want to try it at work, and the last time I used it it crashed a lot, so it really doesn't seem worth all this. Am I missing some little trick here? Does anyone have any suggestions? I tried using apt-get install enlightenment but it does not recognize the package.

The thing is, I am sure I will run into this again with another program, so if anyone has any tips, hints or suggestions pleas send them my way.

Have you tried building it form source?? The configure file should build it around what you have on your computer.

If you loaded RH 9 as a desktop vs. workstation it did not load any of the devel packages required...

if you are not set on enlightenment, I would suggest trying www.xfce.org . It is a very nice, clean and lightweight desktop manager.

I was just reading on another form on this site about xfce4 and thought I would give it a try. I downloaded it but haven't got around to installing it. BTW, I did load RH 9 as a workstation because I do programing on it....however now that you say that, I did a custom install, so maybe I should have just selected all the packages. I do that every time I install a system. I go for custom and invariably I regret later on not installing something. Although, they should be on the RH9 cds am I right? Maybe I could just install them from there!

About xfce, is it any good? Difficult to configure?

xfce is really easy to configure....one menu.xml basically and you can have all of your apps in a right click menu.

At first it was a little weird but after 30-40 minutes the light came on. the documentation is great for it too. it's like a hbrid between kds and gnome without the memory hogging.

if you wanna get all the RPM's for your other issue go get Red Carpet from Ximian and then you can just run the list of dependencies from the enlightenment documentation.

I am just wondering about xfce and KDE programs. For example, I want to run Klipper while I am in xfce. Is there a similar program for xfce or can I run Klipper from xfce? I rely on Klipper alot (klipper is a program that stores all the things you have copied and pasted so you can access them again)

Plus....stupid question.....how do you say xfce? :) Do you say x-f-c-e or as I have been saying x-face?

LOL...I don't know how to say half of the stuff I use....

All of your KDE and/or Gnome stuff should work as normal.

there is a /etc/xfce4/menu.xml file that you can edit to add menus to your right click. you just place a name and the command in there and they run normal. as far as I can tell so far, everything runs as if I were in gnome or kde. the desktop manager is just cleaner.

I have been reading through the documentation on xfce and I think any program will run....as long as it conforms to certain requirements. So, I assume some will not be able to run. I want to start using it, but I am too busy at work to configure it :(. It looked cool though for the few minutes I used it. Just have no time to configure it now. Thanks for your help.

I know what you are saying. I was going to e-mail the menu.xml to myself at work to do it here and I forgot.

it's all good though. I have to figure which apps I need anyways.
