Help Editing /usr files

Hello,

I am new to Linux and I am currently using FC5 with KDE. I need to edit some files in my /usr directory to change some icons and install some new cursors. However I have encountered two problems. 1st, I cannot create new files or edit files under this directory because I do not have permission. I have opened a terminal and made myself a super user but this hasn't helped. 2nd, I used theme manager for KDE to install a new icon theme which worked however I do not see the files located under the /usr/share/icons directories. At the very least how does one go about editing files in these locations? THANKS! Lon live Linux!

What commands are you running when you try to edit the file and what error do you get?

Commands

Right now I am just trying to create new files or draps .png files into an icon folder but it keeps telling me I don't have permission. I am logged in as SU. I have no idea why I can't change this stuff.

semantic nit: You can't log in as SU. After logging in, the su command gives you root powers. If you say "su -", then you ARE root as if you had logged in as root.

You may need to set permissions on the folder in question--using chmod.
eg to set read write and execute for the owner (probably root), and read, execute for everyone else, you would use:
chmod 755 <foldername>

read "man chmod" and "man chown" for more details on how ownership and access works
