Help converting MS word docs?

Hi,

I'm having problems converting an MS Word doc to a Linux readable format. Don't know if this is just a bad file, but when I copied it from floppy to HDD I get an I/O error even though it seems to copy ok.

However I can open it using Kate and the full text is there but with lots of nasty symbols at the start and end. What I want is to be able to write it back to .doc format with minimum loss of formatting information. The document will contain images so thats pretty important.

Have also tried OpenOffice but the document converter just won't seem to do anything. Its strange because I seem to remember just opening a .doc file no problems in a previous version of OO...

So can this be done? What apps should I be using?

M

You should be able to open and edit .doc files in OpenOffice. I don't know why you would want to convert them, edit and then convert back. Just edit them.
Abiword can also read .doc files, StarOffice can too but is no longer free. I even think kword can read them, edit, etc.

I think I must have a bad floppy - fsck throws up some cluster address out of range errors. There also appears to be 2 FATS on the disk.

I knew it wasn't that difficult .
