im trying to install SuSE and im stuck at the VERY start. im installing from DOS but i have 2 hard disks so my cd-rom is lettered E: and when i type this at the c: prompt in dos it wont work, it says invalid drive somethingorother, it seems to work in dos prompt, would it be ok to install in dos prompt?? or does any1 know what the problem is in DOS?
You might want to install not from a DOS prompt but to install by booting into the cd-rom. Check your BIOS and see if you can boot from your cd-rom. That is going to be easiest for you.
As far as i know, I have never installed from DOS, didn't even know you could. But you should be able to find something within your BIOS on what it tries to boot first, that is what you are looking for, 1st boot device, if it is set on your hard drive by default or floppy, it should look state that it is booting into either A or C, if you have no cdrom listed, try whatever letter it is in windows, most of the time either D or E. If you can't boot into a cdrom device, you can always boot into a flopy to start the install.
well i already said that i couldnt access my cd-rom from dos so i copied the whole cd to my d: which i could access under dos, installed SuSE and im using bootmagic to boot so do you know how to configure it to boot linux??? in the bootmagic "add" list it gives me either "linux ex2" or "linux swap", do you know what to do?
i dont matter, anymore, i installed it from a DOS prompt, and irs up and running fine now except for it says my sound card and modem are busy all the time
The snd card/modem prob is likely to be the result of not disabling Plug n' Play in the system bios. And even if you do that now you'll probably only get one or the other but not both.I got both of mine working by re-installing the O/S.
Of course, there probably is some other(easier)way to get those 2 things running.

first off welcome to linux hell that is why windows is no one it works and it is easy to install and run first offlinux is not dos linux is older than dos 1 linux has to be in stalled off of the cd from the monet your computer starts you have to go into your bios and change the boot settings to boot only from the cd secoundly if you have windos on your system linux will wipe out windows the best way is to get another hd use it as a secoundary master slave although it can run on a slave but it has to have the mbr on the first drive if your computer is bleeding edge you need to find a site that will give you a list of compatable componats secoundly get your computer check out makeing sure that it every thing is functioning 100 percent from what i under stand linux is very fault intolorent i have been told that the slightly older version are better i have also heard debeian based linux is preety good
well as i said i already installed linux from a DOS prompt by typing d: then setup- it installed and i dont need to go into my BIOS for anything, secondly linux WONT wipe off windows because i could easily partition my drive but i have 2 hard disks anyways
