Headphone socket(s) on my Dell Studio 1745 not working under Lucid Lynx

N.B. This is slightly modified thread that I opened in the hardware forum which generated no replies.

I have a pair of Creative I-TRIGUE 200 speakers which work perfectly under windows7 but not under Linux Lucid Lynx (nor under 9.10). When the jack is inserted in a headphone socket, the internal speakers are muted but the external speakers are not activated

I have been searching the forums, and found advice to add the line:

options snd-hda-intel model=dell-m6

to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base

Elsewhere I saw that more recent versions use alsa-base.conf

I have both alsa-base and alsa-base.conf on my system. The alsa-base file contained the line:

options snd_mpu index=0

I have added "options snd-hda-intel model=dell-m6" to both files without success.

If it is of any help,the Codec is IDT 92HD73C1X5

I have also tried model=dell-92HD73C1X5 again without success

I feel particularly confused re the two files! Which is the effective one?

Has anyone found a fix for this problem?

Have you tried looking at alsamixer? Sometimes the headphone channel has it's own mute + level settings. Which might only be available in alsamixer.

$ cat /proc/asound/cards

$ amixer

$ alsamixer

Thank you for your reply. The alsamixer is unmuted at 100<>100 level.

amixer produced a lot of information that I haven't yet sorted. Is there anything I should be looking for?

Simple mixer control 'Headphone',0
and [##%] > 0
and [on]

$ amixer | less

or just post the full output here.

$ amixer | tee somelog.txt
gui-editor-of-choice somelog.txt
cut and paste

It could also be driver related and you need to pass parameters to the modules.

$ lspci -v
$ modinfo snd-hda-intel

I don't personally see anything which strikes me but I am not particularly used to looking at these things.

$ cat /proc/asound/cards

Interesting to note that you have a LOT of PCI slots on that thing. Potential there for IRQ conflicts and the likes.

$ find /proc/irq/ -iname '*'

Otherwise your headphone device does seem to be ON and UP.

$ lspci -nn -s 00:1b.0

Perhaps something peculiar with your particular chipset.

Thanks again. I don't know if you wish to see the output from your latest proposed terminal entries, but here they are:

N.B. re your comment about my chipset, may I remind you that the headphone speakers work perfectly under Windows 7.

Regards.

There's a lot of variety in snd-hda-intel type devices. Some people have to manually load the modules with parms specific to their card(s).

HDA intel seems to have irq 22 to itself, so not an issue.

It looks like you're not alone. And it's a known bug at least.

Headphone socket bug

It looks as if I shall have to wait for this bug to be fixed in a later release. Thanks for all your effort. I shall regard this query as closed for now.
