I know there are few threads about it but I still can't find a solution.
All I want to know is whether I need to reconfigure kernel or not.
It looks like DMA is on (?):

Which distro are you using and are you having any problems playing dvds on your optical drive /dev/hdc?

Your kernel is relatively old and was compiled during the time the ide framework in the kernel was in the process of being deprecated and control of ide drives was being shifted to libata using the scsi protocol. During that time period, a lot of people reported problems with their optical drives and setting dma.

Thanks kilgoretrout.
Im using Slackware 12.0. And you're right, CD/DVD are extremely slow so thats the main problem.
There are recepies like editing libata.h in "include/linux/libata.h" (change #undef to #define ATA_ENABLE_ATAPI /* define to enable ATAPI support */). But I don't even have this line it my file !
What do you suggest then ? Should I play (reconfigure) with my old kernel or simply get newer one ?

Thanks a lot !

You need to select the correct driver for your chipset on your kernel. Then reconfigure, recompile and reinstall it, then reboot.

You can't enable the dma until you have that driver loaded. Right now you are using the generic ide driver.

Alternatively, you can just upgrade, and in the way, migrate to SATA/PATA stuff. Be aware that that will require some additional changes (very minor) on /etc/fstab and the configuration of your bootloader, since all the drives will be renamed to sd<X> instead of hd<X>.

You decide.

To find your chipset you can use lspci.

Thanks a lot i92guboj,

I'm going to reconfigure my kernel then.
I'll inform you if I succeeded : )
Cheers,

majkel
