HDMI sound control (volume) software..

Hello, I am using an HDMI sound 'splitter' to extract digital audio to send to my DAC.
This works fine with both mplayer and vlc (my preference).

My problem is no sound manipulation software I have tried has any effect on the sound.
I have tried pavucontrol (for pulseaudio), pulseaudio-equalizer and alsamixer.
Nothing has any affect on HDMI output volume level or mixer.
Help with this would be much appreciated.

I am running Ubuntu 13:10, tried on the Ubuntu forum, no answer yet. Also the http://forum.odroid.com/ forum (I an using an Odroid U3, marvellous bit of kit).. No joy there either
