You may use dd to make a directo copy of the whole disk or tar not to copy the physical structure, but only files. First method is better if you plan to copy the image to the same drive (or to an identical drive). Second method - when you just want to copy the files to any other drive. Note that you'll need to install LILO/GRUB again in this case (fistr method copies everything, with LILO/GRUB).

how would i got about making an image of my HDD including OS, everything! so when i upgrage i jus stick the CD an it restores it??? Ive heard of Drive Image but im not sure if itll do what i need
yes i have jus asked thi question but i think i asked it wrong  if ya know what i mean |
With Linux you can just pack the system directories (or ALL directories on the disk) and unpack it on another disk. There's no difference between system files and normal files. After unpacking and installing LILO/GRUB (what requires installation cd in rescue mode or boot cd) it boots nicely.
There's one but here. You need space for the image before you burn it. Usually the same size you're packing. For example, if you plan to copy 4GB filesystem, you need 4GB free space. |
thats all weel but
thats all well but its my Xpee drive im also hoping to bakup too for Counter strike n the lark :D

i done it anyways for olther ppl who want to know in future by using the search button....
I used Acronis Migrate Easy, used the boot disc and it took 10 mins to copy my OS to my new HDD and that includes the time it took to setup my partitions etc. Then i used Acronic True Image to create an image of my HDD an also created a boot disc for this app too so now when i f00k everything up i jus whach in the boot disc then give it the image file to load on and everything is bak how it was |
