Question Having troubles understanding why the VNC setup is so difficult on Linux

On Windows you just download the client, set a password and as long as there isn't a firewall running you just punch in the IP address on the viewer client and everything is fine and dandy.

I have read 3 different guides on how to set this up on Ubuntu and they all seem pretty drastic including setting up instances and manually adjusting config files.

Is it not possible to use vnc client to see the already running desktop currently running on my remote machine? Do I have to install a whole other graphical interface and run it in it's own session?

No, you just point the existing gui to another display. Usually it's pretty automatic. But if Linux is like cable television, then Windows is like having one T.V. channel. It's less work, but also less fun.
