Having troubles connecting to a vino vnc server from windows xp using tightvnc, help?

I have vino installed on my computer at home which is running Debian unstable, so i'm using GNOME 2.8.
To check if I had vino definitely running I did "nmap localhost" on my computer and one of the line that got output was "5900/tcp open vnc" so I guess vino is running, also if i do ps -A one line says "3823 ? 00:00:02 vino-server"

Now right now I'm on a windows machine (Windows XP) at school, I don't know what software I'm suppose to use to connect to a vino server on Windows and i don't know much about VNC and Vino technically so I just downloaded the VNC viewer software I knew about for windows which was tightvnc [ http://www.tightvnc.com/ ], I opened it up and wrote my IP address and clicked OK, after trying to connect I got the message "Failed to connect to server".

Now I tried going into options and choosing another encoding but I don't really know what encoding i should use so I just tried out RAW, (it was on 'tight' encoding before that).

Now I haven't tried all the encodings yet but I doubt that's the problem, also could the school be blocking me from using this service? I am able to use ssh, ftp and http.

I'm going to continue trying some stuff but any help would be much appreciated.
