having troubles after new kernel install

I installed a new redhat linux kernel (kernel 2.4.9-e8.smp from 2.4.9-e3smp).

I having been following the documentation from this site as it has been the best so far cause I am installing the new kernel via rpm.

URL: http://www.yolinux.com/TUTORIALS/Lin...pmInstall.html

I have done everything that it said but when I boot into the kernel I just installed I get no networking except "lo". When I boot into the new kernel plus my Adaptec aic79xx driver for my scsi host adapter keeps giving me error like:

kernel: aic79xx: PCI3:2:0 MEM region 0x0 unavailable. Cannot memory map device

This is my first kernel upgrade and was wondering if I covered everything. From what I have read in Google Groups it has mentioned something about modutils. Is it possible that I have to upgrade my modutils as well?

Even if any of you guys that have upgraded your kernel could just give me a brief description of how you do it I would appreciate it as well.
