having trouble installing quicktime4linux-2.2

maybe I just don't understand how to configure. I am new to using linux on a desktop. I was able to exact the program, but I can't configure it, and thus make or make install doesn't work.

here is what I tried below.

josh@josh-desktop:~/quicktime4linux-2.2$ configure
bash: configure: command not found
josh@josh-desktop:~/quicktime4linux-2.2$ configure quicktime.c
bash: configure: command not found
josh@josh-desktop:~/quicktime4linux-2.2$ ./configure quicktime.c
./configure: 22: arch: not found
[: 22: i686: unexpected operator
[: 27: ==: unexpected operator
./configure: 39: Syntax error: Bad fd number
josh@josh-desktop:~/quicktime4linux-2.2$ ./configure
./configure: 22: arch: not found
[: 22: i686: unexpected operator
[: 27: ==: unexpected operator
./configure: 39: Syntax error: Bad fd number
josh@josh-desktop:~/quicktime4linux-2.2$

Any ideas, the instructions just said to configure?

There exists no command by name 'configure'
"configure" is a script in e.g. quicktime4linux-2.2 ,
to be run with 'sh configure' or './configure'
( The dot . meaning "the current directory" )

Good Luck !
