It's an old PIII, 450mhz, 128 megs of RAM, 10.3 gig hard drive, ATAPI CD-ROM. I'm a total Linux noob, so be gentle.

It gets far enough along that it finishes base installation, but then tells me that initrd-tools failed to install. That's it, that's all. And I can't proceed without it. Nothing besides that.

I read it might be overheating, but nope, this old bird is colder than an ice cream freezer. I even gave it a thorough rubdown with Mr Compressed Air to be sure. My efforts were met with the bleakest failure.

Can anyone help?

When you say 'an old Gateway' is that Gateway the manufacturer or gateway as in an old box to become an internet gateway/router/firewall?

If its the manufacturer have you tried a live CD to see if you have any exotic hardware thats causing it to fail (network card, sound card, etc)

If its the later then you could try http://www.coyotelinux.com/products.php?Product=coyote for a router/firewall that runs from floppy.
