I suspect you will find that most diehard Linux geeks default to rsync.

I've just been experimenting with it and I like it. There's a graphical frontend for it called "Back in Time" that I learned about here.

Did you happen to find features in this package, that compares changes to files, and determines duplicates, and informs on dates and times of edits and views..?

With "rsync", isn't one's private data flowing around the Internet for anyone with smarts to copy and read it at will..?

My understanding is that rsync encrypts data the same way ssh does, but I'm not an expert, just a user, and I'm just using it within my home network behind a firewall and a router.

This Wikipedia article discusses the encryption. I've found Wikipedia to be generally reliable for anything that is not overtly political.
