Has anyone cracked the Gimp/TrueType fonts mystery?

I've been reading up on this for the past half hour and am just stymied. The last thing I've been trying is the instructions from the gimp website itself and even that just ends up with errors.

I was thinking that my system just didn't like ttf alltogether, but then I got them working fine in Sodipodi.....so I don't know what the issue is with Gimp.

Anyone got TrueType fonts working happy with Gimp, care to give me a tip or tell me where you learned how to do it? I'm running JAMD which is RH 9 in a nutshell. I'm using Gimp 1.2.3.

thanks for any advice (and yes, for the past half hour I've been using the search feature extensively on this site...can't find anything that helps me though)

I don't know about Red Hat, but Mandrake comes with a truetype fonts conversion utility, which makes the fonts show up in all my apps. I think there is a ttf font server you can run, but you will probably find it easier to convert them.

well actually I just got Photoshop 7 working so I'm in the clear. :)

will look into that fontserver though.
