Question Hard Drive won't mount after resizing - gParted; Ubuntu 6.06

Hello, I wanted to move my data from my 120G hard drive to an 80G drive. I resized the larger partition so I could copy it over to the other drive using the gParted Live CD. Now when it boots up, it freezes up when it says

Mounting root file system...
When I boot it in recovery mode, it says

Kernal Panic - not syncing: I/O error when reading memory image
Further up the screen, it says

attempt to read beyond end of device
I'm guessing that it is reporting the image size to be roughly 118GB when it is now less than 80GB. I'm thinking I could boot up to the Ubuntu DVD and run some sort of disk scanning utility. Any ideas? Thanks for the help.

(Take note of my sig)

Sounds like you resized the the partition, but not the filesystem.
Easiest fix is to put the partition back - making sure you don't do anything to the filesystem.
If nothing has been written you'll be o.k. - I'd be worried about things like (boot) logs and such from your unsuccessful booting.

Personally I hate GUIs for screwing around with partitions. I'd delete the partition and reallocate it big again using fdisk.
Then simply copy the data (not dd or partimage or any other image-type software) to the smaller drive. If the data is less than the new partition size there is no point doing it any other way.
