Hard drive space filled, X fails, says connection reset by peer

Mandriva Linux, 2006. Used linux a few years.

When I went to start the computer, I get an error message about squid failing to load. Then, X will not start (says connection reset by peer, thought I don't really know how this affects X), and my hard drive has magically filled completely. On shut down (from non-GUI command prompt), SMB fails, along with some others I cannot remember. Any word on what could cause this, and how I can fix it? (other partition of hard drive works fine [so far], and Partition Magic does not detect anything wrong.)

I'd look into why your drive is full: what files are taking up space?

Try 'du -sh /*' for starters, and work your way down from there.

Will do. Thanks.

Another approach to consider would be to boot from a Live CD like Knoppix. The potential advantage obviously would be that you'd gain access to a GUI. Good luck with it

Thanks for your help. Still nothing, I am going to try to install the driver from the linux DVD.

Did you ever find out which files are occupying all your space? X won't start if it can't write logfiles. I don't know which drivers you intend to install...
