Hard drive power down

Hey guys, quick question. I havent been able to find this info anywhere else!

Is it possible with the stock Fedora Core 3 kernel (2.6.9 im pretty sure) to have the hard drive power down after a certain amount of inactivity? like you can do in windows. If so how?!

I think i over heated my drive to the point where the system crashed and wouldnt reboot. And its my mythtv system, so after a few days, the TV playback becomes really choppy too

Personally, I would think about a better cooling solution first. However to answer your question, you set the spindown time of a harddrive use "hdparm -S". Here's an example.

lightning root # hdparm -S 180 /dev/hda

setting standby to 180 (15 minutes)

I am looking into a cooling solution as well, but i would like to keep it up and running until i have time to actually find a suitable one.
