Hard Drive Backup

I want to buy a new hard disk that is faster than my current one. I would like to be able to move everything off my current one and put it on the new one. This includes a windows partition. Can anyone advise me of some software that will allow me to do this?

I recommend Migrate Easy from Acronis: http://www.acronis.com/products/migrateeasy/

It handles all windows filesystems and ext2, etx3, and reiserfs filesystems. You install the program in Windows, but then create a bootable CD. It will copy everything over to the new disk and allow you to change the size of the partitions in the process. I've used it several times and it works great.

In prinicple, you can do the same thing for free using "dd" to copy everything to a new disk, then use qtparted to rsize partitions on the new disk (I haven't tried that myself). But I think it is well worth the $40 for Migrate Easy.

GHOST

Hiya,

Try to take backup with a software called GHOST. It will create an image of your hard drive and you can restore from that image to your new hard drive.

If you need more information about ghost, go to : http://www.symantec.com/sabu/ghost/ghost_personal/

You can install you new hard drive as primary slave (hdb) and leave old drive as primary master (hda). Then boot up the computer with a Knoppix CD and type, as root
Code:
dd if=/dev/hda of=/dev/hdb
That will make a byte-for-byte copy of everything. The problem with this approach is you can't resize partitions in the process. You may be able to resize the partitions on the new drive after everything is copied over using qtparted (see http://qtparted.sourceforge.net/features.en.html), but I have never tried that and would strongly suggest the Acronis product instead. It will save you a lot of time (more than $40 worth).
