hard disk accesses continually...

Hello all. I have installed mandrake 9.0 b3 and it is really nice. However after
a couple of mins. in KDE my hard drive starts to continually access and my performance goes to well below what it should be. This continues for at least 5 mins. then stops. BTW this has also occured with every ver. of Mandrake from 8.1 up to now. Any ideas? Thanks.

During this activity run
top
to see what process is getting the most CPU time and such - would be on the very top. It can be sendmail sending results from crontab.

I think most distros will startup "updatedb" which will scan all of your drives to update the "locate" database. You will see "find" and "updatedb" if you use the "top" command.
