Handbrake 0.9.5 Shuts down computer after a few minutes of encoding - any solutions?
Hi there,
For some reason my Handbrake 0.9.5 seems to shutdown after a few minutes if not seconds of trying to encode a video and I can't seem to figure out why. Has this happened to anyone else?
I have provided below some system stats to elaborate on the issue - if they are needed.
Chances are it's a hardware problem such as overheating.
Do you do any other CPU intensive tasks on this machine, for exmaple compiling large software packages? Does the same happen?
No I do not, I haven't actually compiled anything on my Ubuntu.
When you say "Hardware Problems" do you mean specifically Overheating? or something worse? I only up to recently had this issue with Handbrake on the Linux version. I used to use windows. Question is, would it be something wrong with the motherboard?
It's most likely overheating tbh, and the BIOS is forcing the computer off to prevent damage.
Memory errors will result in funny behaviour, seemingly bizarra behaviour such as running md5sum on the same file twice resulting in different hashes. Other hardware problems may manifest as kernel panics.

I have an i7 cpu, specs say 80c is high and 100c is critical.
handbrake would get the cpu up to 90c.
Using cpulimit
cpulimit -e ghb -l 300%
this keeps the cpu at about 70c.
If temp still to high lower the percentage.
I run 2 terminal windows 1 I use "watch sensors". This assumes you've install lm-senors. The 2nd window I run the cpulimit command.
