Halting on bootup, how do I diagnose?

How do I figure out what is going wrong on bootup?

On boot, everything halts with a message about FUSE and boot stops there.

I then have to hit ctrl+c and then after a bit, ctrl+d.

All I got so far is

Aug 20 21:49:09 localhost kernel: [4294714.048000] fuse init (API version 7.1)
Aug 20 21:49:09 localhost kernel: [4294714.048000] fuse distribution version: 2.3.0

I don't actually get any debug from /var/log/messages /var/log/syslog

This is apparently not fuse but something else blocking startup.
How do I figure out what it is?
