Definitely update, I'm pretty sure the retail version doesn't fully support OpenGL until you update it.
After you download the updates and install them, make sure you have up to date nvidia drivers, and that glx.h and glxtokens.h are installed in the right place.

wine hl.exe -- hl.exe -console -game cstrike -w 1280 -windowed -noipx -toconsole +connect <ipaddress>
that is the command i use to connect to a server...after you set up half-life in gl mode, unless you really want to play software mode, you have to issue more than just wine hl.exe....i set it up to use the console and play counter-strike , with a width of 1280 for i get full screen, i selected windowed just for i can minimize easier, i just noipx just outta habit, you don't need this if you don't want to, i just toconsole to boot me straight to the console instead of having to go through menus and then the connect command along with the ipaddress to join a game.
p.s., the screen will always be "shrunk" upon opening the game, by just running wine hl.exe but once your booted to console it will take full screen.

you can specify in that command line something like:
-w 640 -h 480
or is that what you did?
or did you specify 640x480 in your display settings, and leave
-w 1280 in the command i use?

why are you pressing an ok button?
thats why i have that command -toconsole in the command line for it bypasses all menus...
