(Half Life) Counter Strike & Linux?

Is any one here running Counter Strike with wine on a Mandrake 9 OS? I don't see why it would not be possible to run it on Mandrake when you can on RedHat. Can some one tell me if RedHat is easier then Mandrake, I been running Mandrake because it was an easy install. I had a hard time getting RedHat installed, that was a turn off. I am open for idea's and any suggestions that anyone, yes anyone, has for me......please help!

mandrake

well first of all in order to get some help you need to specify what is wrong, you cannot just say it dosent work. You also need to give some background info like what ver of wine did you try it with and what type of error do you get when you try to run it, and how did you try to run it, ex. what command did you use?

other than that i am willing to help you out.

here is a nice tutorial on how to get hl running in linux with wine
http://lhl.linuxgames.com/howto/half...HOWTO-0.5.html

Ok, I feel stupid, I'm stuck. I and trying to install winex as the instructions say on the link you posted. I get to here and become completely lost. more below

Now, download WINE. With Transgaming now working on it, I recommend getting their version (winex). I will assume that you downloaded wine into /usr/src, so your wine source will be in /usr/src/wine. For more information on this process, please see the winex Sourceforge project site.

To use CVS, try this:

# export CVSROOT=server:anonymous@cvs.winex.sf.net:/cvsroot/winex
# cvs login
*** There is no password (leave it empty) ***
# cvs -z3 co wine

I went to the link and down loaded the winex files (wgi-1.13-src.tgz and the wgi-1.13-setup.sh). I made sure that I down loaded the files in this directory /usr/src Do I have to create a /wine (/usr/src/wine) directory because just downloading the file does make it. Also do I need to logon to CVS, if so, where? Thank you for helping a newbie.....

I must be making this hard, no?

yeah you are making it harder than it is heh.. ok open a command prompt, make sure you have root priviledges.. cd to /usr/src/winex/ copy and paste this in to the command prompt

export CVSROOT=server:anonymous@cvs.winex.sf.net:/cvsroot/winex && cvs login && cvs -z3 co wine

the winex CVS is not the same as their binary releases, its trash. get the binary realease 2.1.1 i think, if you dont wanto spend money or cant steal it from enywhere you will be better off using wine, as its works just as good as winex for half-life, cs and what not.

http://winehq.com/ is the homepage
and this is the link to the latest release
http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/ALP...0030115.tar.gz

after you download it do ./configure, make depend, make. and make install
also read the README and INSTALL files to find out how to create a config file and where to put it

hope you have nvidia card and their accel glx drivers installed, make you life alot easier
PS: dont forget to look at the how-to
http://lhl.linuxgames.com/howto/half...HOWTO-0.5.html

I have a ATI 7500, do you think it will be a problem? Going to find out either way and will post it.... Let me ask you another stupid question. When you say do - ./configure, make depend, make. are you saying to do this in the console and are these sets of rules that I should know? Can you please post a link where I can see the lingo? example: .exe = ?

once you download it open console and extract it with "tar zxvf filename" then go into te dir it makes when it extracts and type
./configure --disable-debug --disable-trace
make depend
make
make install
then copy wine-20030115/documentation/samples/config ---> ~/.wine/
the ~/ referes to your homwdirectory ex /root or /home/user or whatever
might wanto edit config file to taylor your system
then go into hal-life dir and type
"wine hl.exe -- hl.exe -w 1024 -game cstrike -noipx -console"
that shouold start you off
look at
http://lhl.linuxgames.com/howto/half...HOWTO-0.5.html

OK, I got the download and did these steps:

1. tar zxvf Wine-20030115.tar.gz
file extracked
2. ./configure --disable-debug --disable-trace

What I get is this, does this look correct to you?

Running configure...

configure: creating cache config.cache
checking build system type... i686-pc-linux-gnuoldld
checking host system type... i686-pc-linux-gnuoldld
checking whether make sets $(MAKE)... yes
checking for gcc... no
checking for cc... no
checking for cc... no
checking for cl... no
configure: error: no acceptable C compiler found in $PATH
See `config.log' for more details.

Configure failed, aborting install.

I do goto the directory that was created (wine-200301150). I even tried it from the ./tools/wineinstall and I get the same message. PLEASE HELP.

Let me also say this, I am only running Mandrake linux 9.0 on this box. I have the Half Life CD and would like to install from there. I did do this /mnt/cdrom Sorry for not saying this sooner.... I really do thank you for your help...

looks as thought u dont have a compiler, it probobly wasnt installed when you installed madrake, im not familiar with mandrake but you will need to install that before you can install wine because you need to compile it, it should be somewhere on your mandrake cd, install gcc if its there

doea mandrake use rpms or does it have its own package format?

if this fails, contact me via email and ill hook you up

Im sorry...what are winex binary files again? Thanks.

Another thing...the winex application on transgaming...is that the full version or what? Whats the "cvs" file under it? Which do i need? I have Wine and installed Counter-strike. It worked but when i try creating a game it hangs. I know i need to update my CS from counter-strike.net but Im only testing games in linux right now...nothing serious.

So if you can please answer my Winex questions that would be great.
