Gxine can't play streaming video

I used to be able to watch video on the web by clicking the link, gxine would kick in, and everything was terrific. Now I get the following error message:

xine engine failed to start.
No demuxer found - stream format not recognized

It's worth noting that I've tried this for streams that worked fine before.

I just installed firefox--could this cause trouble? Any other thoughts?
