I'd guess that you don't have things like the 'libgnomeui-dev' packages. These probably contain the pkg-config files.

The thing to put into a search engine is generally the key words or entire error phrases and especially the missing items along with other things to narrow it down, like 'Mandrake libgnomeui-2.0.pc'. As far as "forcing" it, that doesn't really work. What you can do, in some cases, is limit the number of dependencies by disabling features. The out put of './configure --help' will often tell you this, along with the README or INSTALL files or other docs. As far as the whole process, just search the web for 'linux compiling tutorial' or the like. I haven't read it but it looks like it's in the ballpark - maybe
