I would really love a GUI downlaod manager. I don't mind the terminal but its sort of cumbersome for simple tasks. I don't want to get all into it to resume a download. I have tried in vain to compile (gwget-1.0.2.tar.gz). When I run configure on Mandriva, this is what I get.

I can't find libgnomeui_2.0 anywhere. I can find ones that are probably updated but I really don't know.They have a different extension. I found gkt+2.0 and maybe one of the remaining. On Mandriva 07 there is a libgnomeui2. Are all these libraries part of an entire package I'm missing? Are these things needed at all?

Operating systems are not presently my area of expertise. I know the basics of system calls and what a dll is but that's about it. Does anyone know of a tutorial or key words I could put in a search engine to help build an understanding of "dependency hell". I have no idea if i have to force it to compile or if the configure function usually complains or what. Iv'e studied assembly and plain C for micro controllers but would also like to make some open source programs because of the voids. Proprietary O.S can pay for a full version. All others should be free. If I had an over view it would be a great asset. The solution to compile this file would be great too.

I'd guess that you don't have things like the 'libgnomeui-dev' packages. These probably contain the pkg-config files.

The thing to put into a search engine is generally the key words or entire error phrases and especially the missing items along with other things to narrow it down, like 'Mandrake libgnomeui-2.0.pc'. As far as "forcing" it, that doesn't really work. What you can do, in some cases, is limit the number of dependencies by disabling features. The out put of './configure --help' will often tell you this, along with the README or INSTALL files or other docs. As far as the whole process, just search the web for 'linux compiling tutorial' or the like. I haven't read it but it looks like it's in the ballpark - maybe http://liquidweather.net/howto/index.php?id=82 which shows up from 'linux compiling howto -kernel'
