Hey Guys !!!

Opera won't play in YouTube. I did everything to install flash player but it still won't work. Currently, I have Opera 9.25 and I have the latest flash also.

I'm new to linux, as I have Ubuntu, so I dont how to exactly install plugins like flash player. How do I get flash player to work in Opera so I can view streaming video in YouTube?? Guys, I really need your help.

Did you install opera through the package manager? Because flash worked for me out of the box. But I know from previous versions that you might have to link them to the opera plugins directory.

This might work for you.

download flashplay untar unzip etc. and then cd flashplayer9 then sudo ./flashplayer-installer follow directions. /usr/lib/mozilla or /usr/lib/opera

Hey drakeo... I tried what you said about entering cd flashplayer9 in terminal, but all it said was: no such file or directory.

And oskar.., i tried to do what you recommended, but i think i'm not doing something right given that i'm totally new to ubuntu 7.10.

i think the best approach would be to start from scratch. i tried to uninstall Opera. but, when i reinstalled it using synaptic manager, i would get the same error as mentioned above. So, it really didn't uninstall at all.

i would like to start all over, but uninstalling the Opera doens't really uninstall it. Guys, what should I do???

you must if it was loaded by you.not synaptic. delete the two /etc/opera files.
delete the /user/bin/opera file delete the /usr/share/opera directory delete the /usr/lib/opera directory. and if you want to get rid of all your personal info go to /home/your-user-name click show all files and delete .opera file I keep a copy of that file because I can go to any linux computer create a new user and put that file .opera file in my /home/user. and now I have all my passwords and bookmarks and settings all ready done. hope that helps.

drakeo, thanks for the reply.... when i try to delete the files you mentioned, i get a popup window that says that i dont have permissions to delete them. how do i give msyelf permission? thanks.

Delete them from the command line with "sudo rm -r /usr/share/opera/".
Be very careful with this command. Do not copy and paste, and double-check for typo's. You can wipe out your entire system, and it won't ask twice.

Oskar, I did everything you told me... delete all the various opera files lingering in my filesystem through the sudo commmand. Afterwards, I had reinstalled opera through the synaptics manager. The problem still persists without letup. I even reinstalled flashplayer through synaptics and it still doesn't work. If this continues, I'm going to have to go back to windows xp and unfortunately, this will mean a chalk up for miscrosoft.... I dont want to go back to windows, but this is getting monotonous... any more suggestions?

the problem is the debian package my friend. I have been using opera 9.25 with slackware the day it came out.before that I used flash 7 in opera 9.24 for you tube. you need to start building and installing your own programs are you using a 64 bit system. if so down load the source tar un tar and on opera it does the install by typing ./install.sh another thing when you go to the ubuntu down loads do you see at the bottom tar source there is a reason pre-built binaries can suck. Thats why linux runs so good build the programs to your computer configurations. people every day down load prebuilt kernels source and run them and wonder why all the little problems they have.

Drakeo, thank you for response. To reiterate, I am very new to the ubuntu scene, so I'm doing the best I can to smooth out any problems. I'm even considering checking out ebuntu because it looks very good. I wish you can email me critical opera and flash files from your computer to install them on my computer and make this work for me. If you can, please email them to: taurusxz@yahoo.com. Just to let you know, I'm using a 32-bit computer... drakeo, I do really want to make ubuntu work for me. I hope you and the others in the forum can help me get through this.

as for the Ubuntu, Opera and Flash problem...

I know that stable 9.25 Opera does not recognize libflashplayer.so of Flash 9 even if it is in correct path such as
/usr/lib/opera/plugins

possible solutions:
1) using a patched file
2) using an older version of Flash (Flash 7 for example)
3) installing a Debian 9.5 Beta version of Opera

I think I had tried solution 2 on another PC and it worked, but I can't rememeber exactly...

solution 3 works... I am using it.
only notes are that saving a web page I have a .mht suffix appearing instead of .htm
(ignore it or correct it manually)
and... sometimes the browser crashes in submitting something... but you can automatically restart Opera from where you were...

current stable Firefox browser works fine with Flash 9.

in any case, be sure to copy, from a shell, in root modality (sudo su)
the plugin to the correct folder:

sudo su

and then:

cp /home/yourfolder/libflashplayer.so /usr/lib/opera/plugins

and/or:

sudo su

and then:

cp /home/yourfolder/libflashplayer.so /usr/lib/firefox/plugins

ever sence opera fixed the flashplayer 9 problem with 9.25 seems this has taken up alot of my time telling people how to do this one more time. get opera by the source and untar and type
sudo ./install.sh then click yes then it is up and running when you go to put your flash player in go to flashplayer down load the source untar type sudo ./flashplayer_installer then type /usr/lib/firefox/ if it comes back says that is not a valid directory. then look in your directory it may be firefox2.0 or somthing . if you have seamony same way. if you try to install to opera you will get a warning say opera cant use it. but that dosnt matter because when opera starts up it looks in the plugins of all your browsers by default ok. well my you tube works ok with flahplayer 9 on my opera. good day chaps

Drakeo, thank you for your advice. At the present time, I'm awaiting shipment of my new hard drive since my old hard drive got messed up last week. I won't be able to fix this opera issue until after I receive my new hard drive. However, as soon as I get it, I will follow your instructions, and hopefully, this will resolve this sticky opera/flash player issue for good.

Drakeo, this is what I did as you asked. Please tell me if I did something wrong... First, I downloaded opera 9.25 to my desktop and then I untared it (I guess, "unzipped" it in laymen's terms) to the desktop. When I untared it, 3 files spewed out onto the desktop: control.tar.gz, data.tar.gz, and debian-binary. I then opened up a terminal by pressing alt and F2. I entered 'sudo ./install.sh' then pressed run. Nothing happened. I then went to Applications and got a terminal that way and entered the same command. I got the following error:

x@xxx:~$ sudo ./install.sh
sudo: ./install.sh: command not found

OK, what am I doing wrong?
