GURUS!! Is Linux good enough for Website Development??

I would like to know what web development options are there in Linux and is it possible to do everything from design to development to deployment using Linux tools???

Before, u start giving me options, read further to understand my issue.

I work for a s/w house in India. My primary work is on Microsoft .NET Technologies and am quite proficient with Web and Application Development in Windows. But I am a amateur Linux user at home and getting better at it day by day. Call me a fan if you like. I've done most of my university projects in Linux. But they were all apps and never involved websites.

I have now been given the task of redesigning the company website. I would like to, from start to finish, use Linux as my primary development enviroment in the office, use Linux tools and softwares only for the development, and finally deploy it on a Linux server too.

For web development in the company I use Photoshop(I am not a pro yet, but I am quite proficient :D), Macromedia Studio MX, and VisualStudio.NET. DB's are generally Oracle and SQL Server.

I need help in figuring out equivalents in Linux, how I can go about it, is my aim realistically feasible, what kind of bottlenecks might I face, etc. In short I need advice and guidance on Web development on Linux. I know there are HOWTOs and man pages and all. What would be best is if current Linux Web Developers give me some hints and direction.

I hope to get some converts in my company in the process.

Thanx

I cannot help you on all of that but I do most of my development on linux and all of my hosting on linux. A replacement for photoshop would be gimp, it is installed by default on most linux machines, it takes awhile to get used to it but many people say it is just as good as photoshop. If you are writing the code to the sites and not just using a wysiwyg editor then I would suggest getting Zend Studio, it is made to work with php but you can do any language in it, I love it because it lets me work off from ftp as if it was on your local machine.

Macromedia Studio, I do not know if there is anything else on linux that can do flash, I know some people are running it through wine (emulation) and I heard in one of the newsgroups that Adobe is talking about porting to Linux so we can install it as a regular app, but for now you would have to run it through wine.

For the database support go with MySQL if you know msSql it will be painless to work with, the same commands for the most part.

Mozilla composer is being worked on by a Lindash sponsored project.

Quanta is one of the most often cited and is apparently getting wysiwyg. There is screem (gnome based).

Or dual boot with Windows (LOL couldn't help it, just kidding)

Well, on my office, all of the web apps are jsp-ejb based and there are several people which have ALL of their work done on 100% linux machines. I can tell you they don't want to switch back to W2K !! (talking bout performance & stability )
