gunzip gives unexpected error (RH8.0)

gunzip reports this error on Red Hat 8.0:

[rob@localhost temp]$ gunzip Unicode-String-2.07.tar.gz

gunzip: Unicode-String-2.07.tar.gz: not in gzip format

However the target file does *not* have an error!
It comes from CPAN; I managed to extract it just fine using a machine running Debian.

Any help would be appreciated.
