You haven't listed what you tried and why you found them lacking, but I will suggest gFTP which I find to work well equally in all DE's and WM's. It's built using GTK but is not gnome dependent.

I cast my ballot for gftp, also. I haven't got mad using it yet, and that says a lot.

it's okay, all you need is gtk and it should work with any window manager...

Glad you like it!

Another non-KDE/Gnome user--they're fine, but I like minimalism! And the added speed.

well, there's webmin (a web-based GUI), which has modules that let you configure several different FTP servers...

http://www.webmin.com

just my two cents...

I wonder if you wouldn't get more answers if you posted a thread like (for example) "Need ftp-server recommendations" since this thread is about clients...

I'm not a moderator, but it seems to me it would be a better deal for you. Users browsing the list of topics aren't going to know you asked here in this thread.

I would recommend pure-FTPd. It is an FTP server that's very easy to install and configure. I had never run FTP servers before when I got my hands on pure-FTPd. Took me a mere 10 minutes to set it up.

That may be true, but I myself never even got to try kbear because there were just too many configuration options to set the first time I ran it...

If you're looking for a Qt-based FTP client, KFTPGrabber is a much better choice IMO.
