GUI Frontend Development (programming) questions

I am not a programmer by profession, or hobby. My only experience was with Java in college. But I want to learn.

What I want to do is creat a gui frontend for mcrypt. It will be a frontend interface for encrypting and decrypting files on my computer. For GTK im using GLADE.

Basically I need help. I dont know how to connect mcyrpt to the buttons on the GTK interface. What language to use? Also I found a python interface to mcyrpt, what does that mean? Also what does it mean when a programming language has a package that are "bindings" to some other language.

Im looking for a place to start learning, I really appreciate all those willing to help out a newbie.
