Question GUI Browser(s) unable to connect to certain sites (gentoo 2.6.34 r6 w/ openbox)

In process of building Gentoo system, certain sites will timeout when being accessed via GUI browser(Firefox, Opera, Chromium) but on the same computer(login and privileges same also) lynx will load site rather quickly...

system specs:
Gentoo 2.6.34 r6
openbox 3.4.11.2
Intel GS45 embedded graphics (ICH9) family
lynx 2.8.7_p1

sites are:
www.mol.usmc.mil
www.amu.apus.edu (landing page is accessible but links to admission and logins are not)

commonalities:
server redirects
secure connection(https)
certificates

Has anyone ever run into something like this?

I don't even know where to begin...(and don't say Google, I have been searching and will continue to search as I await a reply)

I suspect something is wrong with the install itself. Perhaps a missing dependency?
or even something wrong with the certificate handling?
or possibly a rendering issue involving the graphics adapter?

How should I go about checking my current install to see if it is missing something valid?

Any ideas are welcome, thanks in advance.

I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 with Gnome and Firefox 3.6.12.

When I attempted to connect to the first link Firefox put up a warning that the server was attempting to create a trusted connection but that the certificate could not be verified.

Quote:
This Connection is Untrusted
You have asked Firefox to connect
securely to tfas.mol.usmc.mil, but we can't confirm that your connection is secure.
I didn't have any trouble connecting to admissions and student login at www.amu.apus.edu.

So maybe there is some incompatibility with your version of Firefox and these web sites. Try using another browser such as Opera.

Thanks for the quick reply, I have tried this with multiple browsers such as Firefox, Opera, and Chromium. All with the same result. That is why I suspect it to be the system.

No problem here, except for the security warning for link nr 1
Any proxy, firewall?

Kind regards

Problem solved it was my ISP blocking the sites(thank you Japanese hosting company)... I went to the local library here and can access them fine (GUI or not). looks like I'm going to be calling them tomorrow...
