GTK2 problems

i want to install gtk2 and i need pango atk and glib to do it so i get the latest version of glib and it installs without problems(i think)so then i try to install pango and it says i have an outdated version of glib even thought it suggests an older version then the one i have installed.
what can i do?
and how do i check what version of glib pango and so on i have installed?
