GTK2 and GTK3 file picker dialogs

I am struggling with the GTK file picker dialogs.

First problem: The GTK2 dialog defaults to opening in $HOME. More importantly, the Location bar is always open. I can immediately start typing when I want to open a file in a different location.

The GTK3 file picker dialog always defaults to Recently Used, which is 90% useless to me, and always opens with the Location bar closed. Pressing the / key usually opens the Location bar but not always, and the extra step is annoying.

Is there a way to configure the GTK3 dialog to act the same as the GTK2 dialog? That is, always open to $HOME but more importantly, always open the Location bar?

Second problem: Is there a way to configure both the GTK2 and GTK3 sidebars? The Desktop entry is useless to me and the population of all unmounted hard disk partitions only creates unecessary clutter. My main office machine has many partitions that I use for testing. I don't want those devices in the file picker sidebars. (Same behavior in the Caja and Nemo sidebars too.)

Whereas the GTK3 sidebar remembers the width adjustment, the GTK2 sidebar does not and I have not found a way to fix that.

Poking around the web indicates the GTK3 default of selecting Recently Used is hard-coded but individual apps can override that. But only on an app-by-app basis.

The Location bar not appearing seems to be app-specific too.

Any help appreciated.

There are two main configs you should try to edit: ~/.config/user-dirs.dirs and ~/.config/gtk-2.0/gtkfilechooser.ini (and probably it 3.0 counterpart)

Been there, done that.

GTK3 has no counterpart to gtkfilechooser.ini.

OK, that's one of many good reasons I've avoided gtk3 as the plague.
GTK3 seems to be a complete digress from a good idea.
Where would these preferences be specified in gtk3?

I left Gnome when they introduced Gnome3 as it was something different and worse.
Nowadays I run fluxbox instead, as that seems sane.
